Film Studies - Train To Busan [W3 Movie Review]
Train to Busan is classified as a horror genre movie. Horror genre has three sub genre which are unnatural, psychological and massacre or also known as slasher flicks. This movie is under the unnatural sub genre because it consists unnatural zombie which it does not exist in the real life. Unnatural category in horror genre is define as an external force threatening civilians and bodily mutilations such as being bitten by a zombie and altering the normal body states.
The movie is starts with a lorry driver accidentally crash into a deer and runaway, but a moment later the deer stands up again with rolled white eyes. This part clearly shown that the zombie virus has broke out in that town and wildlife has already been infected.
The resurrection of the dead deer (or dead bambi?)
The scene then cut to Seok-Woo, a workaholic fund manager and absentee father who does not spend much time for his daughter, Su-An, decided to accompany his daughter board KTX to visit his divorced wife in Busan on Su-An's birthday. When they are about to depart, a wounded lady rushed onto the KTX and bitten a female attendant. This has started the disaster. The wounded lady infect the lady attendant, the lady attendant infect the train passengers and train passengers continue to spread the zombie virus through all other train carriage. Luckily, Seok-Woo as a caring father went to search for her daughter and saves her life from the zombie tide.
Along their escape to their carriage, they met a tough working-class husband, Sang-Hwa and his pregnant, Sung-Gyeong. Seok-Woo and the uninfected passengers realized those zombies can't open the slide door by themselves. This observation has later provided a lot help to the protagonists to escape their life from being tearing apart by the zombies.
Even though Seok-Woo is a caring father to his daughter in before scene, but he is also considered as a selfish person to the other passenger of the train, His subordinate inform him that the project in-charged by them is the main reason of the zombie incident broke out. He manage to reach Busan along with Su-An without notify other passengers after receive the news that Daejoen is not safe anymore. But later he soften his heart and try to help as Sang-Hwa saved him from being bitten by zombie when escaping back to the train. He also tried to save the homeless man even he does not have close relationship with him.
On the same time, Yon-Suk, the rich CEO has show his selfishness in this movie. When Jin-Hee receive a call from Yong-Guk to inform that they have safely board the train and managed to reach the carriage where the uninfected passengers are in, Yon-Suk used persuade technique to let all passengers have fear against Seok-Woo and other survivors, such as they should have got bitten by the infected along the way to their carriage. He also ordered the male attendant to cover Jin Hee's mouth to prevent Jin Hee helps the survivor. Due to this reason, one of the elderly among the survivor is gotten by the zombies.
At the end of the movie, Seok-Woo have fight with Yon-Suk, Seok-Woo got bitten and started to turned, but he remembered his promise to his daughter. He suicide to prervent himself turning into zombies to hurt Su-An and Sung-Gyeong. This has made a plot twist as usually protagonists will not die in other movie. Even if a protagonist hurt badly, they will get some medicine and heal in a short time.
In my opinion, Train to Busan is not only a simple horror movie, even it is a movie about zombie biting the humans, but it also consists mixture of excitement, anger and tears. Even a homeless man willing to sacrifice himself to strive time for Su-An and Sung-Gyeong to escape.
